What I believe to be the cause of the trouble are the files in
/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/
apt-get update leaves some empty files there, and it's exactly the
package lists corresponding to those files that bzip2 chokes on. I got
into the habit of running

I've learned to know that you are NM for the libnm-glib0 package. I'm NM
for evolution, and we have a problem with the new 1.6.1 release, see

I've pretty much isolated the problem. Evolution uses NetworkManager
