I compiled a local version of the latest upstream gtkpod 0.99.8
(released 9/23/06) and while my ipod mount point still showed garbage
text - it allow me to clear out the garbage and set it properly, thus
fixing this bug.

I didn't get around to locate the patch that introduced the error with git
bisect as suggested by Jens, however linux-image-2.6.18-3-686 (2.6.18-7)
solves the problem for me.
