I have been having the same problem, with many images, especially
scaled ones. I'm gathering that this is a known problem with using
XAA? The closest explanation I could find was #41, but this is
clearly not a compositing window manager.
Switching to EXA made images render correctly. On the

You should put an autoload so M-x fetchmail-mode works, but if you mean
auto-mode-alist then I guess that could be optional. The code seems
modest, even minimal, so enabled by default wouldn't take you into
anything really weird
