The noloop trick worked for 2.6.24 but failed for 2.6.25. I wrote to
Dmitry Torokhov who told me to run the kernel with i8042.debug and send

I have been experiencing this same phenomenon. I am running the
current version of gnome-terminal in lenny as of this morning (July
17). It seems to mostly happen then gnome-terminal has been running

Sorry, I forgot to mention that to actually fix this bug you have to use
the newest caption[1] package which has beamer support, but it's not yet
in debian.

Problem occurred again on my custom kernel after 2 days of operation
without a problem.
No reaction to anything; magic sysrq, caps/scroll lock,
ctrl+alt+backspace/del, any of the Fn-key combinations or short power
button press.
I'm willing and able to debug this, but I have no idea how to proceed.
