I am no expert but on my opinion a temporary fix would be to bring back MD5 for
the time being and then fixing/extending python-apt functions to check for more
secure sums like SHA* first and then if not found fallback to MD5.

for your work on live-build. I see its not your first patch against git
version. I also realized that something is wrong with cache but I was
not sure what and how to check that.
I think that sometimes live-build is not caching every packages and
second time I build with same packages
