I had a copy of the adwaita theme in the .themes folder under my home directory. Cancelling that the problem disappeared (it must have been fixed in the meantime in the gnome-themes-standard package) So I think the bug-report can be closed. Thanks, Carlo.

I have installed fglrx-driver 1:11-9 (I had to downgrade xserver-xorg to version 10). The overall rendering is much improved. Icons are there. Yet there is still a lot of flickering during window resizing, for example. In my opinion the bug should still be open. Best regards, Carlo.
