Today I upgraded my system, together with libc6, and now evolution hangs
on startup, usually displaying Formatting message... on status bar.
I noticed that also Veryifing message causes
that I'm not using Gnome as my DM, but I'm using
Enlightenment DR17 (cvs) with gnome-settings-daemon running under it. Maybe it
can help.

I got the same; to be able to use Evolution again you must open GConf
and toggle the key apps-evolution-mail-notify-gen_dbus_msg.
You will lose D-BUS notify, of course.
