It seems to be a bug in binutils[1].
I'd say a change in binutils exposed a bug somewhere in the toolchain.
Here's the commit which added the check and the message:
As a disclaimer up front: I'm actually part of upstream. As a long term
Debian user I couldn't refuse the honor when Andreas asked me to help
with the package. *Thank you all for the great work you do to make

Dear Maintainer,
the current RAxML package contains only the vanilla version of RAxML
compiled without support threading or SIMD. Given that typical use cases
of RAxML require days of computation, enabling parallel processing would
improve the
used RAxML using MPI parallelization, I cannot say much
about this, though.

ready, we won't do any more releases in the 5.x series, so I've
backported the fix for you (patch attached).
best,

Hi Konstantinos!
I suppose you've got no objections against me merging the one-line fix
to GBS_reuse_buffer in the upstream svn/trunk. Would you prefer to be
mentioned or not mentioned?

When exporting large amounts of sequence from ARB the export file
