It seems this is on purpose.
The way to configure the masqmail route is to put a meaningful mroute
setting in /etc/network/interfaces , or, otherwise, a name setting.
ifupdown then just exports these as IF_MROUTE and IF_NAME. A meaningful
name would be the one of your provider or the LAN
