The debian version of the kernel package provides
kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone as a runtime selectable option for a
control: reassign -1 src:steam

Make sure you have either libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 or your proprietary
driver's i386 glx package installed. See bug #718599.

There is a new upstream version uploaded now, 0.2.0+git20180917. Does
this fix the problem you're seeing?
For anyone that would like to help here, it would be helpful to figure
out which upstream commit fixed #898257, which is almost exactly the
same problem.
