The command mkfs.gfs does not work without various parameters passed in:
# mkfs.gfs /dev/shared/testvol

# mkfs.gfs -p lock_dlm -t Cluster:testvol -j 2 /dev/shared/testvol
As a minimum you need to pass in the above parameters - the locking
protocol, the names
