tried your suggestion, but the problem persists. Peculiarly with both
virtual interfaces up, ifdown eth0:1 now also shows odd behavior. After
issuing the command, the virtual interface is still shown by ifconfig.

If more virtual interfaces are defined with the same subnet, taking the
first down with ifdown seems to take them all down.
