I have to report that after I worked out the above mentioned solution
to the problem the dying applet bug was gone, but today it re-appeared
on log-in.

Another solution is to remove all (except the default) applets from the
bottom panel. When an newly added applet is removed, these messages
appear once again on next login but on subsequent logins everything is
OK.

I confirm this bug on Debian Sarge, however I encountered this
