appears to be because of missing epoll(4) support prior to 2.6. There should
at least be a warning somewhere in package description or Debconf that 2.6
is not supported.

The default configuration file has proc_groupname nobody, but that group
is called nogroup on Debian. This prevents imapproxy from starting if
configured to run without privelages.
