Just a note that this behavior still exists in the current samba/winbind
packages.
Also a correction to my initial report -- the long initial delay does
occur on boot, it was being masked by a login.

default installed setup. It tests for a readable /etc/network/routes
and exits with an exit code of 0 if the file is not found.

User authentication with Winbind takes a very long time (around five minutes)
for the initial authentication. While winbind is waiting, all other
authentication (such as su) is also blocked. Subsequent authentications are

The table states that umask 0022 gives file permissions of -rw-rw-r--
