IMHO the correct thing to do.
You probably want to stop the processing in some other way than using
abort() - and the printf may or may not need to be there (it does print
out the error earlier on as well).

version is not available - it outputs an error (Unable to find a version ...
for the package...) - but still returns 0(=OK).

I installed java-1.6u10 manually and it showed the same bug.
I then installed java-1.6u7 (latest I could get from the archives at
sun) and it worked like a charm.
The bug is in u10 then. (I believe the system was running u9 before -
but I'm not entirely sure).

This bug just showed up a few days ago with an update, for me.
giving ntpdate the -u option does nothing to solve this problem for me.
any other ideas as what I could try? ntpdate is NOT set to start up as a
service of any kind (it's not even in /etc/init.d/).

I moved the S??ntp service to S99ntp in /etc/rc2.d, which atleast made it
not bother me anymore :)
