This has something to do with the auto-libgc transition? what possible
workarounds do I have? Because of this I can't install a number of apps
depending on libgcc (mongo, node, etc).

This bug affects the current stable branch. When upgrading
python2.7-minimal from 2.7.3-6 to 2.7.3-6+deb7u2, python dies an ugly
death.
Please upload a fix soon.
