I did experience the same issue Alex had this morning. apt-get update
failed at starting the MySQL server after updating the package. The
last 3 mysql-bin logs had root:root as owner and this prevented the
mysql server from starting. I tried resetting the permissions and the
run upt-get upgrade again, but this resulted in the same issue.

I have been able to succesfully run the update by runnign chmod -R
mysql: /var/lib/mysql from another console at the moment the upgrade
script tried to restart the mysql server. After that the server starts
without problems and apt-get reported a succesfull update.
