BUT updating libaprutil1-dbd-mysql to 1.6.1-4 (from unstable as of now)
fixed the problem.

via log = /var/log/mysql/mysql.log in /etc/mysql/my.cnf and try again?
It would be good to see what was the last query that phpmyadmin sent to
the server. If phpmyadmin has any debugging log it would be good to
