packaged in svn works fine and is theoretically ready to be uploaded, but there
seems to be something wrong with the Apache config because I ran into some
obscure bug when testing it.

I'm not quite sure how to fix this issue. From what I can tell from a
few quick tests, your fix seems to work, but the pickle documentation
itself states:
