If MC is built against S-Lang you'll get the described behaviour. There is
a check whether the terminal windows contains at least 5 lines and at
least 10 columns. If you build MC with ncurses as the screen library it
will start.
In any case MC is pretty unusable in such a terminal.

mcview doesn't try to read the whole file in memory usually.
It could happen though. If the viewer is presenting data which
comes from the output of a command i.e. you press F3 on a
.tar.gz file and the viewer is in a parse mode (F8). Still in
this case data is red in chunks. To bring the whole

Hello,
Thomas, it is pretty easy to understand which screen library is
used by MC. Just type mc -V and take a look at the
output - you should get one of the following lines:
Using system-installed S-Lang library
Using included S-Lang library
Using the ncurses library
Now, back to the

Hello,
I am not able to reproduce the problem with current MC cvs. Could you try
with the latest debian MC package and see if the bug is still there ?
Thanks!

This is a known problem. MC expects the date to occopy 3 fields. When it
gets four it gets confused.
What is the remote system into which you are loggin in ? Can you login into
that system via ssh (not from MC) and type the following command in the
directory which yields broken file names:
ls
This patch has been commited upstream too.
