I have the same problem too. I previously used lenny without problem.
I started with a fresh squeeze install with php and suphp.
After apt-get, suphp no longer work. Unless suphp installed, php is alway
run as apache module.

I built the .deb using your debian package files on Lenny amd64.
- I first had a problem with architecture in debian/control
Architecture: i386
I changed it to amd64.
- the debian/changelog is missing. I have to add it.

We can then backport the existing official packaging for those older
releases that you use. Should be little added effort.
Squeeze as well. Lenny is the bad boy. ;-)

Here is the description of a possible bug introduced with 4.79.11-2.
I use Mailscanner with Exim on an uptodate Lenny box. I upgraded to
Mailscanner 4.79.11-2~bpo50+1. Previously I was running 4.74.16 without
problem.
Since the upgrade, I found many

The following line is wrong:
my $msconf = new FileHandle( /etc/MailScanner.conf) or warn Cannot open
main configuration file /etc/MailScanner.conf;
Should be /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf

The following line is wrong:
SCANNERSCONF=/etc/MailScanner/virus.scanners.conf
Should be /etc/MailScanner/virus.scanners.conf
Also check /usr/sbin/upgrade_MailScanner_conf.
