Thanks for the link. It seems that the latest ncurses-base update actually fixed TERM=screen-256color to behave the same inside tmux as it does outside tmux. For instance, with TERM=screen-256color outside tmux, my terminal renders standout mode in an italic font. Whereas, inside tmux, standout mode is rendered (1) as reverse video with the previous ncurses-base 5.9+20140118-1 package and (2) in an italic font with the current ncurses-base 5.9+20140712-2 package. I didn't realize that it was standout mode that changed because all I observed was that, inside tmux, things that were previously shown in reverse video were now shown in an italic font.
