All, It appears that in order to update extensions chromium wants background networking to be enabled. Background extensions was disabled in version 52.0.2743.82-4 (30 July 2016).
Extensions seems to update as expected after commenting out --disable-background--networking line in /etc/chromium.d/default-flags. Best wishes, Tarmo
