the grammar for floats does not recognize numbers such as 1e20, as it
assumes that explicit_base will have to contain a decimal dot.

method I am using above should presumably be okay.

/usr/share/doc/petsc2.2.0-doc/docs/troubleshooting.html mentions the
MEMCHKQ macro. Grepping the Petsc sources shows that such a macro just
does not exist (any more?).
