Nothing was muted (at least that I knew ...)
I've attached a compressed xwd dump of the GNOME Alsa mixer.
With this, I can't play a CD.

I rechecked: The volumes aren't muted.
Bug#401780 contains an attachment of the output of gnome-alsamixer

Since upgrading udev, my debug log file fills up with thousands
of messages during a few minutes:

The problem is quite simple: No sound. The card appears to have
been detected correctly (see below). I am also part of the audio group:
$ id
uid=1000(ig25) gid=1000(ig25)
groups=20(dialout),24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),1000(ig25)
alsa
I tried this out on another account on my system, and the
strange line breaks didn't occur. Must be some configuration
issue on that account.
Problem is, I have no idea where to start looking for the
broken configuration option.
