I have the same problem with my TC-261MXI (mini PC) and I managed to get
more logs which seem to be informative.
I also booted from USB. I used syslinux with kernel and initrd from
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/debian-installer/i386/

I think it would be good if apt-src could be configured to check for build
dependencies (and potentionally propose to satisfy them) only when it is
really going to compile, and not when it only downloads the source.
