according to the log you sent grub was successfully installed:

I have discovered, purely by accident, that if I have my Windows 98 O/S
disc in the CD drive as the Linux system is powering up, a program on
the Win98 disc will gain control and offer me the choices Boot from
Hard disc, or Boot from CD ROM. On selecting the Hard disc choice, the
Linux systems
