I made a typo in my first message, and mentionned icon-theme-cache
instead of icon-theme.cache. the above command should really work.

Yes, I use XFree86 and it never worked. I use a custom keymap but with
any other app, backspace works as it should and delete also.

I have been having trouble with the 0.14.6-0ubuntu7 package from Ubuntu 7.04.
Basically what it does is that it fails to register some taps as clicks because
of the strange readings described in the previous post (X=1, Y=5855).

I have tried your fix, and although the values are modified correctly, it
doesn't help at all with the tap detection. Can you suggest any other fix?
Copying the previous hw->x and hw->y would do the trick, but I have no clue how
to do that.

The fix you posted didn't solve my problem, so I used your idea and I came up
with this fix:
1. apt-get source xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
2. sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
3. cd xserver-xorg-input-synaptics*
4. gedit synaptics.c
5. go to line 1610, where you'll find:
