Update-manager fails with the following error message:

A unresolvable problem occured while initializing the package
information.

While attempting to run Firefox 4.0 on a DEC Alpha, after finally
succeeding in building it from sources, the program fails with a SIGILL.
Upon further investigation it appears the problem is due to an incorrect
relocation

using gcc 4.2.4-6 on a DEC Alpha machine produces the following result:

The program fails with Segmentation fault when run with the following
command:
iceweasel http://www.rideuta.com
A similar failure happens when linking to the above URL from some other
page. The URL http://www.slashdot.org also fails,
