Since wheezy (grep 2.12-2) a patch like this has apparently been merged.
I'm not seeing it documented on the man page. (Shouldn't it be?)
This is undesirable for those of us who use shell aliases.

The problem is mplayer preferring binary codecs to the inbuilt ffmpeg
ones.
Workarounds:
mplayer -vfm ffmpeg, somefile.wmv
add "vfm=ffmpeg," in ~/.mplayer/config or /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
Those make mplayer try the ffmpeg family before any other codec.
