Ok.. Making a bit more sense to me now.
It sounds like this is modifying something in $XDG_DATA_DIRS that fish
can see. Maybe another application is setting $XDG_DATA_DIRS to
encompass more than just /usr{,/local}/share.
There is no XDG_DATA_DIRS set in my shell apparently

That bug report was for powerpc Debian unstable..
But on my x86 machine I can't get 'open' command to work at all. Mimedb
correctly identifies the files, but the "mimedb -a filename" completely
fails to return anything even after I select a specific program in nautilus.
