A small update:
I now went to control center to set numlock to be turned on whenever I log
in to KDE. After this, the [Keyboard] section appeared again to my
kcminputrc and login failed the same way again. Now that I had identified
the file causing the issue, I did line-by-line editing on the
Package: kdebase
Version: 4:3.5.8.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal
After doing dist-upgrade yesterday KDE failed to start. When splash screen
showed that it is loading the desktop, screen went black and returned to
the login prompt (can't remeber if X restarted).

Actually I have to broaden this bug - my firefox crashes really really often now
(which is something it hasn't been doing before). Nearly every time I press the
Home-button, it crashes. _Everytime_ when I click refresh or F5 it crashes.
