...and booting does not progress past that.  I have reverted to v0.67-1.

I did a dist-upgrade October 28 and then tried v0.67-2 again and got
the same result.


This sounds very similar to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1017842#5. Could you try deleting the final `cat > /dev/null` line in v0.67-2? If so, this bug will be fixed in 0.67.1-1 that I am currently preparing.
