Hi, I think it is safe to close Bug #155256 for maxima package. With version in Sarge I get a "host is unreachable" message when the browser cannot get to the URL. I am not sure about the firewall part, but I doubt different firewall configuration might make maxima to hang. The bottom line is whatever I do with html browser I still can do the calculations in maxima, it never hangs on me.
