Please provide openldap compatible schema in /etc/ldap/schema.
Other packages are doing so too:
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/i386/pdns-backend-ldap/filelist:/etc/ldap/schema/dnsdomain2.schema
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/i386/autofs5-ldap/filelist:/etc/ldap/schema/autofs.schema
(and a couple more)

These packages also don't need to have to ldap installe don the same machine, but they provide the ldap in that directory. After setting up the ldap as backend for some apps, I expected the samba schema in /etc/ldap/schema/samba.schema (not ldif) ...

For consistency reasons, I vote for placing it in /etc/ldap/schema

Only a low prio wish on the wishlist...
