It looks like this was quietly fixed somewhere between 10.2.5 and
10.6.2, maybe in 10.5.1 by:
* dh_install: Optimize some patterns into bulked "cp" calls. This
optimization is only applicable in some cases (notably, it is always
disabled by --exclude).

Hi Gergely,
I would like to fix the following bug, but I would prefer to do it in a
way that also worked for dh-exec:

The workaround of using a ? worked. I guess nobody cares to have honest
full file manifests for debs.
I just spent half a day hacking the equivs-build script to support white space
in file names. Only to find it is a limitation in dh_install as well. I was
understanding of equivs-build limitation as it is only a basic entry level tool
for packaging and thus not needing for every situation. But
One workaround is the usage of wildcards. If the file/directory is
called "foo bar", then you can use "foo?bar" to match the
file/directory. There is only a problem if there are files/directories
like "foolbar", "fooxbar", etc.
Cheers,
Benjamin

I also tried passing filenames with spaces on the command line and this
does not work either. Would it be possible to at least make this work?
This should not require any change in the format of the install file...

I'm having the same problem with dh_install: I have a set of user
provided files that I need to turn into a Debian package. But this fails
if any of the filenames contains a space.
So has any progress been made in the past 5 years?
Is there a known workaround?
