Any chance of seeing this patch included? It seems useful to me and I
actually needed this capability in a mapping scheme I've set up.

first, thanks for the interesting discussion. I played around with our
final idea (pre-up.d script which activates autoipd on all
interfaces), and it works pretty well, apart from the nasty delay that
autoipd takes to start up and get an IP.

I wrote a small patch for this which adds a new method 'ipv4ll'. This
uses avahi-autoipd to configure the interface.
We were actively discouraged to use the zeroconf package in Ubuntu (in
fact, we were asked to remove it), thus I did not add a fallback to
