My problem was (and is) that "vsound --file xyz <command>" runs the command, but doesn't leave any files behind when it exits. Something in the manual to explain that the file name must end in one of a list of strings (which will determine the format used) would clarify why vsound doesn't work, but I'd prefer it if vsound did something more useful in such cases.
