After another day, I can happily report that smbd seems cured by the purge of the files (all normal-sized, but many obsolete, and some with case-significant names) in /var/cache/samba/printing. As I said, it seems to me that the need for the manual purge indicates that some kind of bug remains, but I certainly leave the decision of what's best to do wrt Debian bug reports to others.
