Why would it be a problem to replace contacts' protocol icon with a
buddy icon when possible?
All the information currently in the protocol icon area can still be
shown. All you have to do is show tiny status icons like Kopete's to
the right of the large icons. Protocol information,

This request should be fixed by the elipsis code currently in
2.0.0cvs. the particular solution advocated here will only work well
with some gtk themes, as the space available to the left side of the
icon varies with theme.
replacing the protocol icon with the buddy list is not acceptable to
