Package: aptitude
Version: 0.2.15.9-2
Followup-For: Bug #286974

I also experience this bug.

I changed my /etc/apt/sources.list from using

#deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main
#deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main

to using

deb http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/debian/ testing main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

After that, I did an aptitude update, which resulted in the "could not
stat..." error messages. apt-get update fixed it.
