I eventually got the system to work, but now (weeks later) I'm not
sure what I did to fix it.

I have the same problem.
John , do you use kernel 2.4.x ?
( it is the default, so if you did not specify
anything extra, then you ended up with 2.4.x )
It seems the 2.4 kernel is lacking the PDC driver.
Or it is not in the initramdisk image.
So the kaernel ccan not find your disk.
