A workaround is to add "-motd localhost" to the command used to start bzflag.
I've encountered this too, and found this bug report didn't provide the workaround, so I checked the code. bzflag.cxx accepts a -motd flag, to override the default motdServer configuration setting. The manual page doesn't mention the flag.
