Hald is unable to open /sys/bus/usb/devices (although the file
is there with permissions: ls -la /sys/bus/usb/devices
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 13 00:03 /sys/bus/usb/devices ), does
hald think it's a directory? Now the devicelist isn't build which
renders the
hoi :)

hald should work again when you remove the /sys/bus/usb line.
thanks! that worked (and also removed some other weird
behaviour, don't remember from where I read that line in the
first place). hal/dbus has never worked for
