Because I do not want to inflict such an ugly thing on users, and anyway
old releases do not support all the features provided by new releases.

I just read bug 317332 about the mess udev is creating for itself.
Why not have two packages that use different configuration files?
for the 2.6.8 kernels and one for the 2.6.12 kernels. Only the package
that applies to the current kernel should start iself uppon reboot.
