I'm sorry, but debconf is 100% perl code, it does not contain things
like double frees, since perl code does not need to do a free().
Probably this is a bug in the libterm-readline-gnu-perl module or
whatever other perl module you have installed for the readline frontend.

It seems this is a bug in the readline stuff. If not here, then
libreadline4. Strace attached. Note that the error shows up whether
dpkg-reconfigure actually ended up using readline or not (as in the
example).
