I can confirm this has affected me too after upgrading from mysql-server
to mysql-server-4.1 however, my syslog output is somewhat different.

could you please provide an strace of the mysqld call?
the easiest way to do so would probably be to put a "set -x" in the
top of /etc/init.d/mysql, and look for the call to mysqld_safe, and then
likewise for within mysqld_safe to find the un
