I'm running into this same problem and thought I'd chime in. I'm running FAI 2.8.4 on i386. I'm using debootstrap 0.3.2 which I'm sure is the cause of the problem. In the changelog entry for debootstrap 0.3.1, I see the comment: - devices.tar.gz reduced to minimal set of devices; frontends
