Here are the additional information gathered from reportbug.
Yesterday I tried a purge followed by a reinstallation of alsa-base, but
the bug is still there.

The problem is that you have OSS modules loaded. We have to find out why.
Run dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base. What is currently selected?
Select ALSA and reboot.

After running reconfigure of linux-sound-base I still have OSS modules
loaded, but now it works:
loke:~$ lsmod |grep snd
snd_rtctimer3152 0
snd_intel8x0

Make sure that no OSS modules are listed in /etc/modules. Note that
i810_audio is an OSS module. The ALSA module is called 'snd-intel8x0'.
